Show Report - Broadside 2018
This Sunday was Broadside, the smallest show that I regularly go to. However its advantage is that it is the closest show for me, and it has a different variety of traders, the majority being smaller more local ones. After a big spend at Salute, buying most of a BEF army for bolt action and some more Blitzkrieg Germans to fight them, I only had a small list of things that I was looking for, and due to specificity I wasn't any able to find everything (unsurprisingly made to order BEF 2 pounders seem to be online only).
Both Bren carriers were at 20% off which I thought was a good enough deal to justify buying them! The bag of counters are for pin markers in Bolt Action Games, although the small number of 1s and 2s led me to repaint the 9s and 8s. Also not pictured was a bag of clumped foliage that I nabbed for just £2 on the bring and buy and I will experiment later on using them on my German armour.
The quality of the games varied to a significant degree, there was quite a few sci-fi spaceship games, and while I am sure that they are fun to play they do not have the same visual effect that historical games have for me. The one exception was the Star Wars legion game which had some good looking scenery.

My favourite game on show, a winter encounter between British paratroopers and Germans using the Chain of Command Rules. The gorgeous scenery really helped illustrate why 28mm can be such a great scale
A light-hearted participation game of Conan the Barbarian, the 54mm figures had plenty of detail and the sculpted river was the highlight of the board
Battle of the Marne in 6mm by Postie's Rejects. The tiny scale helps give a more strategic view of the battle. The hills looked very gradual and natural, from a distance the board looked like it could of been an aerial photograph
The highlight of the Sci-Fi games on show from Medway Wargames club using the new Star Wars Legion rules and figures, seemed a very bloody affair!
Maidstone Wargames club brought along their amazing Naval Raid participation game seen at Salute. The scratch built warship is a great centre piece and I don't blame them for re-using this game considering how much effort went into its construction!
Overall it was an enjoyable show, and certainly fulfilled its expectations. It helped motivate me finally start painting my BEF in the past few days, the only shame was the lack of stands selling vallejos. However, like the final elements of my BEF army the couple of paints that I need can easily be bought online so no problem there.
